Think fabric when you are looking for a special way to make a statement. Create a unique wall hanging from a variety of fabric styles. You can make it any size you like; take the size of the wall and any adjoining furniture into account when deciding whether to keep it small or cover a large portion of the total wall area. Take a walk through your local furnishings and fabric stores to get ideas of the type of fabric you could use - to hang well, it will need to have some weight to it.

Other sources for fabric to use as a wall decorating ideas include patchwork quilts, tapestries, embroidered pieces, dhurries and lightweight floor rugs. Search antique stores and markets for old lengths of fabric, embroidered tablecloths and runners. Craft markets will have colorful cultural handwork from Africa, Mexico and India.

Paper it creatively. There are some fabulous wallpaper designs that very expensive and dramatic, but if you invest in just one roll of a beautiful paper, cut it into lengths about two-thirds the height of the wall, mount it on timber backing boards or frames and hang one, two or three (or even five, if you have the space) for a really dramatic effect.

You can also find magnificent gift wrapping papers in specialty paper shops that have not been folded. You could use these in the same way to achieve a stunning look.

The scrapbook wall. You probably have several boxes of collected memorabilia waiting for you to have the time to organize them into a meaningful collection. Choose a theme and look out the various pictures, tickets, postcards, clippings, programs etc that you have saved.

To avoid the final work looking messy, try to coordinate colors. Make a pleasing arrangement on a board for a permanent display, attach the pieces and add a protective coat of matt varnish. If you want to be able to change the display, use a removable adhesive to attach the pieces directly to the wall. The completed display can be any size you choose - make it large for a dramatic effect.

Possible themes could be theatre, music, a particular trip, a special event, ancestors and family.

Pictures and photos. You may have family photos spread around the room. Make a statement and put them all together on the wall. Choose coordinating or matching frames of different sizes and orientation and spread them first on a table - move them around until you are happy with the placement.
