Turning Old Furniture to New...
How to Do a Modern Furniture Makeover
Here are some ideas that will bring your furniture piece back to life by turning your old furniture to a new piece of furniture that can be adored and cherished.
Check out the Curbly clip on How to do a Modern Furniture Makeover and a summary of how to go about it below...
To do a modern furniture makeover, you will want to start by preparing your furniture to be painted or stained by cleaning it and making any necessary repairs. It would also be a good idea to have some wood filler on hand to fill any scratches or holes.
If you plan on staining the piece, you will want to purchase a wood filler that will closely match the finishing stain that you are trying to achieve. Using a good quality wood filler will create a smooth surface after sanding.
For the next idea on turning your old furniture to a new piece of furniture, you will want to sand your piece, using any protective gear such as safety goggles or masks. After sanding, you will want to wipe your piece clean to prepare for painting or staining.
If painting, be sure to use primer first. After your first coat of paint or stain, sand over again by hand using a 220 grade sand paper. This will make the surface of the piece more durable. Add another caot of the paint or stain, and even repeat a third time with sanding and adding another coat if necessary.
You can also paint designs or patterns on your piece, or add wallpaper or gift wrap which already has design. If using wallpaper or gift wrap, be sure to glue it to the piece. Then you will want to put a finishing coat of polyurethane on your piece to protect the design. This will also add another layer of protection, and give your piece a nice shine.
Finish the facelift of the piece by adding knobs or pulls that will coordinate with the piece. There are many varieties of hardware, and I have found that most hardware is inexpensive, depending on what you want or how much of it you need.
Consider these ideas on turning your old furniture to a new piece of furniture for furniture that you just don't want to get rid of, maybe because it is sentimantal, or because it is functional. It doesn't need to be hidden away in storage, just sitting there collecting dust. Give it a facelift so you will enjoy using it again.
