DIY: How to Build an Upholstered Headboard

Want to know how to build an upholstered headboard and fill that empty wall behind your bed?

Making your own upholstered headboard is a great solution to fill that empty space, and can easily be changed to update your decor.

Instructions on How to Build an Upholstered Headboard

First, You will need to measure the space behind your bed that you desire for your headboard. Depending on the shape that you want for your headboard, you may want to design a template on paper, then trace onto your plywood. You can use a power saw to cut the plywood.

For cushioning, you will need to cut a thick piece of foam to the shape of your plywood, and glue securely to the plywood. Next, you will add a layer of batting that will go over the edges of the plywood, and under a few inches. The batting will add cushioning under your fabric and to the edges of your headboard. Using your staple gun, staple the few inches of batting at the back of the headboard to keep it in place.

Now the fun part on how to build an upholstered headboard....the fabric! When cutting your fabric, make sure you have enough to go around the edges of your headboard to staple. Be sure to iron out any wrinkles in your fabric before adding it to your headboard.

Center the fabric on your headboard, then lay everything face down to staple the fabric to your headboard. (holding everything together to turn face down may require more than one person!) This is an important step, because you will need to pull tightly on the fabric at the back of the headboard to staple. This will give it a tight, even fit on the front.

In time, if you decide to change the colors or decor in your bedroom, you will be able to choose another fabric to coordinate, and easily change it. Just remove the existing fabric, leave all other materials in place, and replace with your new fabric!

The final step on how to build an upholstered headboard is securing your headboard behind your bed. You can hang the headboard on the wall with flush mounts or by adding legs, that are screwed into the back of the headboard. You can secure the legs to the wall or the bed. Whatever you use, be sure that it is tightly secured to prevent movement.
