There are websites online that are devoted to creating different floor plans and furniture layouts for clients who write in with a decorating challenge. By researching some of these sites, you will probably find a room of similar shape and size as yours that will give you a workable solution to your own furniture layout problem.

Create Your Own Floor Plan

You can create your own floor plan. It may take a bit of time, but if you enjoy drawing and sketching, then this might be a great way to get you even more familiar with the end results. You can use free software like Google Sketchup, Sweet Home 3D or do it yourself. If you decide to do it yourself, here's a quick how-to on how you can go about it...

• Measure your room and any fixed items like heaters, bookcases etc.
  
  
• On a sheet of paper (or graph paper), draw up a scale version of the room and add any fixed pieces. Take the time to make this step as accurate as possible to get the best results. Make the drawing a good size to make things easier for you to visualize the room - about 12 to 18 inches is really good.
  
  
• Using another sheet of paper, draw an outline of your furniture as if you were looking down from the ceiling. Cut out each piece individually. Don't worry about exact shapes or fabulous artwork; just get the dimensions true to scale.
  
  
• Now it is simply a matter of "playing" with different placement ideas for your furniture and accessories by moving the paper "furniture" to different positions in the "room". Use some of the ideas you found on the websites. Move your actual furniture into place according to the diagram and look at the effect.

Use Furniture Templates or Kits

Timely is a popular maker of furniture templates and furniture arranging kits. They have templates that cater to amateurs as well as professionals. Simply purchase the templates of your choice and then use them to draw up your own floor plan.

Use Free Online Room Planner Software

There are others, but one worth using that's fairly simple and colorful is Better Homes and Gardens' Arrange-a-Room. It has a simple drag-and-drop interface. You can resize the graph to the size of the room that you like and then add the furniture accordingly.

Using floor plans and furniture layouts will make the task of rearranging a room much easier and this is a sure-fire method to give you a great decorating results.
