How to Find or Create a Decorating Focal Point

A room with a focal point is inviting to enter and a comfortable room to be in.

A focal point is something that is a feature in the room that the eye automatically goes to on entering the room.

It should be the first thing you see and be the most prominent object in the room.

The focal point can be an architectural feature like an arch, window, fireplace or timber work; it can also be a piece of art, furniture, a flower arrangement or wall hanging.

Here is a step by step guide to finding the focal point in your room.

1. Go into the room and look around. Walk around the room; sit in different pieces of furniture.
   
   
2. Is there an architectural feature (something "built in")?
   
   
3. Is there anything that stands out wherever you are in the room?
   
   
4. What is the largest object?
   
   
5. What is the most prominent or obvious thing in the room?
   
   
6. The answers to these 4 questions should have given you your focal point in that room. The answer may even have been the same for every question.
   
   
7. The focal point of the room should be something interesting or appealing to look at. If the current focal point in the room is not the most pleasing feature in the room, it is possible to create a new focal point.
   
   
8. Use a light to highlight and enhance your focal point.
   
   
9. The focal point becomes the center of the decor and other pieces are grouped around and outwards from that point.
   
   
10. If you can't find anything to be the focal point, create one by painting one wall a contrasting color and add accessories against it to create a unique focal point.
